A setback in the airlines battle against ETS

THE airline industry has been emitting a lot of noise and smoke about the European Union’s decision to include it in its existing scheme in which industries have to buy tradable permits to emit carbon dioxide. 


The requirement to buy permits will be proportional to the entire length of the flight, not just the part of it that is in EU airspace. So non-EU airlines and their governments are especially indignant that, as they see it, the EU is trying to impose taxes well beyond its territorial limits.
