Barra Airport is a short-runway airport that serves the small island of Barra, Scotland. The airport has 3 runways and is unique as it’s the only airport in the world where scheduled flight use the beach as runways, which in high tides, is under sea level.

The Air Ministry officially licensed Traigh Mhor as an airfield on 7th August, 1936 and scheduled flight began soon after. In 1974, Loganair began operating from Glasgow to Barra under a contract from British Airways and took over the airports responsibilities. In 1994, Highland and Islands Airports Limited took over the airport responsibilities.

Barra Aerodrome has a CAA Ordinary Licence (Number P792) that allows flights for the transport of passengers or for flying instruction as authorised by the licensee (HIAL). The airport is not licensed for night use.

 

Today, Barra Airport has over 700 flights and over 10,000 passengers each year. It has become a popular film location in recent years due to the unusual runway.
