Airlines grapple with increased regulatory focus

Nearly 32 years after the U.S. airline industry was deregulated, U.S. carriers are facing a wave of government and union rules that threatens to unleash the biggest regulatory changes for the industry in a generation.


Driving the shift is mounting consumer dissatisfaction with airline service and growing exasperation over airlines' fast switch to charging extra fees for services — such as checked baggage and in-flight food — that used to come with the price of a ticket.
