Jumbo Hostel
4. august 2010 21:58 | TravelBy Joe G.
The Jumbo Hostel in Arlanda, Stockholm might just be the most spectacular way to spend the night at Arlanda. The Hostel is located inside an old retired Boeing 747. It features a restaurant, 27 rooms and 76 beds.
The owner, Oscar Diös who already owns hostel Uppsala Vandrarhem och Hotell, was looking to expand his hostel business in 2006 and heard of an old 747 for sale. He bought the decommissioned aircraft and received a building permit in December, 2007. The aircraft was parked and complete renovation was done.

As the aircraft is registered as a hostel, it needs to obey same regulation as normal houses. So, the complete interior was renewed, 450o seats were removed, ventilation and climate control was installed and the aircraft was redecorated. In the summer of 2008, the jumbo jet was towed to its current location just of the tarmac at Arlanda Airport, within 10 minute walking distance to the check-in counters.

The aircraft is Boeing 747-212B, originally manufactured for Singapore Airlines in 1976. It then operated for the legendary Pan American Airways before ending its operation career with the Swedish airline, Transjet. Transjet later went bankrupt and the fleet was sold.
There are 2 common rooms in the aircraft, one in the front section and one in the back section of the second floor. The front section is where the breakfast is served. The second floor common room has the actual first class seats were travelers can relax.

A bathroom and showers are shared. The hostel has one suite that is located in the cockpit. The cockpit suite has private bathroom and shower. Wireless internet connection is complementary and each room is equipped with flat-screen TV´s.
The prices ranges from $50 for a dorm style room and to $350 for the cockpit suite.
