The Middle Seat Terminal
Bearish Behavior: Airlines (All But One) Earn 2Q Profits!
Airlines are a bit like squirrels and bears – they make their money in the summer and store it up for the winter. That’s an oversimplification, of course, but historically it has been a basic tenant of the business.
And so second-quarter profits are important for airlines. Most came through with much stronger results this past quarter. Only one, AMR Corp., parent of American Airlines, ended April, May and June with a net loss. That kind of punctuates where American stands right now in the industry. It has the highest costs to fly each seat each mile, and yet it by no means has the highest fares per mile.
