Earnings from continuing operations for the second quarter of 2011 were $742 million, or $2.14 per diluted share, compared to $714 million, or $1.92 per diluted share in 2010. Cash from operations in the second quarter of 2011 was $843 million, compared to $1.2 billion in 2010.

Lufthansa purchases 30 A320neo Family aircraft

Lufthansa has placed a firm order for 30 Airbus A320neo Family aircraft. This contract follows the selection by the Lufthansa Supervisory Board of the A320neo Family in March this year. The order comprises 25 A320neo and five A321neo aircraft. These will be powered by new-generation Pratt & Whitney PW1100G turbofan engines. With this latest order the Lufthansa Group, Airbus’ biggest airline customer, will have purchased a combined total of 443 Airbus aircraft.

American Airlines acquires 260 Airbus A320 Family aircraft

Airbus and American Airlines, a wholly-owned subsidiary of AMR Corporation, have signed a firm contract for American to acquire 260 modern, fuel-efficient Airbus A320 Family aircraft.  The contract calls for flexibility for the airline to take delivery of A319s, A320s and A321s, with 130 featuring Airbus’ New Engine Option (neo).  All 260 aircraft will feature large, fuel-saving wingtip devices known as Sharklets.

American Airlines announced today it has entered into a sale-leaseback arrangement with AerCap, a leading independent aircraft leasing company, to finance up to 35 Boeing 737-800 Next Generation aircraft, including 29 firm deliveries, scheduled to be delivered to American. Of the 29 firm deliveries, 26 are previously ordered aircraft and three are newly ordered aircraft. The arrangement also covers six Boeing 737-800 Next Generation aircraft subject to purchase rights that, if exercised by American, would be scheduled for delivery in 2013 – 2014.

Revenue Passenger-Kilometer (RPK) for June 2011 was 8.2% higher than in June 2010 and 5.1% higher than in May 2011. Revenue Passenger was 13.5% higher than in June 2010. Cabin Factor for June 2011 averaged at 65.8% which was 0.8% higher than in June 2010 and 6.3% higher than in May 2011.

Finnair and Flybe to set up Flybe Nordic and acquire Finnish Commuter Airlines

Finnair and the largest European regional airline Flybe of UK announced today that the companies will jointly acquire Finnish Commuter Airlines (FCA), a Finnish regional carrier owned by Finncomm Oy. The companies will create a new joint venture called Flybe Nordic AB, to be split 60 % Flybe and 40 % Finnair. Flybe Nordic AB’s board will comprise three representatives from Flybe, and two from Finnair.
